This episode was a long time coming honestly. Mainly because it took me 10 months to get time to shoot these photos and also because we (the audience/readers) have been aware of Deep Six being missing for the entire run of the series.
Today, with this episode, we finally start getting some closure on that arc with Splashdown, Captain Grid-Iron and Banzai diving down to The Deep to actively rescue their lost teammate.
Stuff is going to get nuts as we go forward the next few episodes, so buckle up people! As usual, click the photos to enlarge them for easier viewing and check after the last photo for some more Director's commentary!
The Deep, or at least the entrance from the pool, is a cardboard backdrop created by the fine folks over at Extreme-Sets and this episode would not look as large and grandiose without it.
As these are the stories of living toys, making a base out of cardboard, especially very nice cardboard like this, totally fits within the confines of the Secret World of Toyeboxia universe. The sets are not cheap, but for a toy like Cobra Commander who has access to a decent amount of human currency: he can do some pretty impressive stuff.
I love aquatic G.I. Joe toys and the v2 Cobra Eels are great action figures. I opted to troop build these as the standard aquatic legions of Cobra, with a smaller amount of Hydro-Vipers acting as underwater combat elites. Since Cobra Commander opted to hide the entrance to his base via a portal at the bottom of a pool, having a good size aquatic contingent of soldiers is a good idea. This group is the Cobra Oceanic Division or "C.O.D." and has enough gear and troops to keep any living toys from accidentally (or purposely) finding their base.
On to Episode 34!
